Mike Sport is seeking a Senior Accountant based in Erbil to oversee all hands-on accounting and financial reporting for its operations across Erbil and Baghdad. Candidates must have at least 5 years of experience and full fluency in English, Kurdish, and Arabic.
About the job
The Senior Accountant is responsible for the full, hands-on accounting function of the company's operations in Iraq, covering both the Erbil (Kurdistan Region) and Baghdad (federal) jurisdictions. Acting as the sole accounting resource on the ground, the role performs the complete cycle of daily data entry and accounting operations, and reports directly to Head Office, where all financial reports are reviewed and consolidated. The role also acts as the main link between Head Office and Iraq's auditors and authorities, and requires solid, up-to-date knowledge of the accounting, tax, labor, and social security rules and regulations applicable in both Erbil and Baghdad.
Responsibilities
- Perform the accounting operations of the Iraq entity across both the Erbil and Baghdad offices.
- Book daily accounting entries and carry out month-end closing activities (journal entries, bank reconciliations, petty cash, POS sessions, general ledger, and credit card settlements) accurately and on a timely basis.
- Follow up on receivables and payables, ensuring accurate recording and timely settlement.
- Maintain organized accounting records, supporting documentation, and filing systems in line with company policies and local requirements.
- Follow up on contract renewals and invoices related to rent and other operating expenses.
- Coordinate all retail inventory accounting activities, including import transactions, landed cost allocation, stock movements, inventory reconciliations, and accurate recognition of cost of goods sold.
- In coordination with HR, prepare employee payment documents and pay slips for individual acknowledgement and signature, and ensure all payments are processed accurately and in accordance with approved instructions.
- Maintain up-to-date working knowledge of accounting, tax, labor, CNSS, and other statutory requirements applicable in both Erbil (KRG) and Baghdad (federal), and ensure full compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Coordinate regularly with the accounting team in Lebanon to ensure alignment of accounting practices, reporting, and compliance requirements.
- Act as the main point of contact between Head Office and accredited/certified auditors in Iraq, ensuring the company's financial statements are reviewed and certified as required for submission in Erbil and Baghdad.
- Travel to Baghdad on a monthly basis (or as needed) to oversee accounting matters, meet with suppliers, banks, auditors, and authorities, and ensure consistency between the two offices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Senior Accountant, ideally including exposure to payroll, CNSS, and statutory filings.
- Proven experience in financial reporting and preparing financial statements is a must.
- Strong, demonstrable knowledge of Iraq's legal, tax, and regulatory framework, in both Erbil (KRG) and Baghdad (federal), is a must.
- Prior experience working independently, handling a full accounting, is an advantage.
- Fluent in English, Arabic and Kurdish (spoken and written).
- Strong command of accounting principles, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end closing processes.
- Proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, particularly for payroll, financial reporting, and statutory filings.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently.
- Good communication skills for coordinating with Head Office, banks, suppliers, the lawyer, and auditors.
- Trustworthy, reliable, and comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy.
- Willingness and ability to travel to Baghdad on a monthly basis (or as needed).
