دەربارەی کارەکە

HKN Energy Ltd. is a privately held, independent energy company with oil exploration and production operations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

HKN Energy is focused on increasing production of its Sarsang Block, located in the prolific Zagros fold, and thrust belt of Northern Kurdistan. We have a highly experienced, diverse team with work experience in over 80 different countries. HKN Energy is committed to building a company culture that is guided by its Core Values of Integrity, Respect, Excellence, Commitment, and Teamwork.

The Operations Geologist is a member of the HKN Energy Subsurface Team responsible for real-time well placement and geosteering of horizontal and deviated wells, translating the geological model and approved Well Program into precise, timely wellbore-placement decisions during drilling. The role covers geological input to well planning and well design, real-time well correlation and borehole-image interpretation, and geosteering guidance to the rig site and Drilling team, ensuring wells are landed and steered accurately within the target reservoir zone. Reports to the Subsurface Manager and works closely with Wellsite Geologists, office Geoscientists, Drilling Engineers, Drilling Supervisors and geosteering/LWD service providers.

کاتی دەوام

  • Sunday - Thursday with Field rotations when required
  • Erbil Office with Field Visits when required

ئەرکەکان

  • Well planning & design: contribute the geological input to well planning and well design, including definition of geological targets, entry points and target windows/tolerance boxes, review of proposed trajectories for anti-collision and geological risk, and confirmation of target formation tops, expected lithology and pore-pressure regime prior to well approval. Support preparation of the geological prognosis and Well Program in collaboration with the office Geoscience team.
  • Well placement & geosteering (core responsibility): lead real-time well placement and geosteering of horizontal, high-angle and deviated wells, integrating LWD (resistivity, gamma ray and azimuthal/borehole-image logs) with offset-well data, structural dip and the geological model to keep the wellbore within the target reservoir zone. Make timely landing-point, steering-direction and stop/continue-drilling recommendations in close coordination with the Wellsite Geologist, Drilling Supervisor and Directional Driller, and communicate any proposed changes through the appropriate management-of-change process.
  • Well correlation & real-time image interpretation: correlate real-time LWD/MWD logs against type logs and offset wells to track structural position, formation dip/azimuth and stratigraphic position while drilling; interpret real-time and post-drilling borehole images to identify bed boundaries, dip magnitude and azimuth, fractures and structural features; maintain up-to-date correlation panels, structural cross-sections and geosteering interpretation in Petrel and StarSteer (or equivalent geosteering software).
  • Real-time monitoring & decision support: continuously monitor incoming real-time data feeds during critical drilling and geosteering intervals, maintain direct communication with the rig site, and provide 24/7 or on-call geosteering support as operations require, including outside normal office hours.
  • Drilling-hazard awareness: anticipate and evaluate geological and geomechanical risks while drilling, including abnormal pressure, losses, gains, wellbore instability, faults and fractured intervals; integrate geological observations with drilling parameters and real-time image/log data and promptly communicate potential hazards to the Drilling Supervisor and office team.
  • Contractor supervision & QA/QC: supervise and quality-assure LWD/MWD, directional drilling and geosteering service providers; identify and communicate service-quality or data-transmission issues and ensure deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Data, reporting & communication: ensure all geosteering, correlation and real-time interpretation outputs are accurate, quality controlled and captured in the Company data repository; prepare real-time geosteering updates and end-of-well geosteering/well-placement reports; update the Petrel project/database with as-drilled well paths and interpretations; maintain continuous communication with the office Geoscientists, Wellsite Geologist and Drilling team and provide clear shift and well handovers.
  • Post-well analysis & continuous improvement: contribute to post-well reviews, integrating actual well placement and geosteering results into the geological model, capturing lessons learned and incorporating findings into future well planning and design.
  • Must be available to provide real-time geosteering support on a 24/7 or on-call basis during critical drilling intervals, including outside normal working hours, on a rotational basis as operations require.

مەرجەکان

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geology, Geoscience, Earth Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in operations geology, well placement and/or geosteering of horizontal and deviated wells in the oil and gas sector; experience in carbonate reservoirs and structurally complex fields is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record delivering real-time geosteering decisions under time-critical conditions, including well correlation and borehole-image interpretation.
  • Solid understanding of well planning and well design workflows, directional drilling, LWD/MWD systems and drilling operations.
  • Proficient in Petrel and StarSteer (or equivalent geosteering platforms such as DecisionSpace/EDT, Paradigm SKUA-GOCAD, Techlog or WellCAD), with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing skills development.
  • Strong analytical, pattern-recognition and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound, timely decisions under pressure.
  • High attention to detail in real-time data quality, correlation accuracy and documentation.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, able to work closely and decisively with rig-site and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including night coverage and on-call support, during active geosteering operations.
  • Proactive approach to learning, professional development and continuous improvement in geosteering technology and workflows.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.
